The gardening team at Buckingham Palace have been busy creating a new fruit and vegetable garden for the Royal household. Her Majesty the Queen and visitors to the palace can now enjoy fresh produce from the gardens.
The design of the garden is really creative and the gardeners have planted some old favourites and heritage seeds to provide a varied and delicious harvest.
View the video below to see the garden and find out more.

We have three light sussex as part of our poultry flock and they are by far the best brooders and mothers we have. The one in the photograph raised three broods last year. After each one was fledged we put her back with the flock and she almost immediately went broody again.
This year she has surpassed herself. As you can see from the picture she is rearing rather a lot of chicks but even she could not manage to hatch out 20 chicks. She sat on 11 and hatched 8. The other 12 were in the incubator and we did not have any more space under heat lamps so we thought we would try them with her. We started at 14 and she had no problems so we thought what the hell and she is a very proud mum of 20 keets.
However this is not the full extent of her talents. While she was sitting on her 11 eggs I would check them each day and spray them to soften the shell for hatching. In the last 10 days of sitting she laid 4 eggs and kept sitting tight. We don't know if this is unusual but we are well impressed with her versatility and that female ability to multitask.

Well for anyone who thought about it, but decided not to “have a go”….you missed a treat. Quaerina had 3 of us pupils and we spent a fantastic day from 10am to 4.30pm learning how to work a Peg loom….and create a ‘wall hanging’ or a ‘rug’….depending on how you felt about your end product.
All the equipment was supplied including mountains of different fleeces to choose from and make use of. Quae even helped us by ‘pulling’ the fleeces for us so that we had more time to spend actually ‘making’ our rugs, which was wonderful.
The weather was fantastic, and so a heavenly lunch was devoured outside in the sun (although we sat under the shade of an umbrella, cos we were all sensible!!!). Copious amounts of tea and coffee were available…….but when the end of the day started to get frighteningly near, it was heads down and we all beetled away like crazy wanting to finish our rugs…..which we all did.
So a big Thank you to Quae and I’m sure I speak for all 3 of us who attended when I say that this is a course NOT to be missed. So, keep a look out for the next one….you won’t be disappointed.

Unfortunately, due to unforseen circumstances, Brenda Dayne is unable to join us for our May meeting. She will give a talk at a later date.
At short notice, Judith Harvey, will speak to us about her work as a Park Ranger in the Brecon Beacons National Park. Judith has a life-long interest in environmental issues and has previously worked as an Area Ranger for the Dartmoor National Park after graduating with degrees in Environmental Science and Countryside Management. |
