Psoroptic Mange found on Welsh Farms PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 23 March 2010 22:09
The Veterinary Laboratory Agency (VLA) has diagnosed psoroptic mange in cattle on 11 farms over the last two years in South Wales.
The disease is caused by Psoroptes sp. mite, but the mites are not transferable to sheep. These are the first cases seen in Great britain since the 1980s and it is probable that the infection has been imported from Europe.
Experience from other European countries has shown that it is possible for psoroptic mange to become the most common skin disease in cattle with associated severe production losses and welfare concerns. Continued
Clinical signs are more severe in the autumn and winter and mild or undetectable in the summer. The Psoroptes sp mites cause a severe dermatitis with scab formation along the shoulders, back and tail head of cattle. There is intense itching.
The disease spreads mainly by the movement of cattle between farms. It has the potential to spread widely because infected animals show minimal signs in the summer months. Also the mites can survive off cattle for at least 12 days.
Once introduced to a farm, all in-contacts will require repeated treatments in an attempt to eliminate the infestation. This disease is another good reason to quarantine bought-in animals after purchase. The cases investigated to date by VLA have failed to respond to macrocyclic lactones (examples are ivermectin and moxidectin) which are the licensed treatments for psoroptic mange in cattle.
Farmers should consult their veterinary surgeon if they see the signs described. If the disease is suspected, your vet will take suitable samples for testing and if confirmed, advise on treatment. Treatment is not straightforward and requires repeated treatments.
Failure to kill all the mites will lead to a prolonged and more serious disease outbreak, as well as increasing the risk of spread to other farms.

Student seeking smallholders' advice PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 08 March 2010 08:04
Hello! I'm Nick, I'm a student of organic agriculture at Emerson college in Sussex. When I leave I am aiming to set up a small holding and put into practice what I have learnt during my studies. A recurring theme I have come across however on visting smallholders is how hard it is to earn a living. I have even come across the belief that a smallholding can be nothing more than a 'hobby farm'. This spurred me on to set up this questionaire for a college project to explore deeper into what makes a successful smallholding. If you can spare 5 minutes of your time (or if you know of other small holders please pass this on) it will be a big big help to me! please click on the link for the questionaire MANY THANKS!!!
