Sunday, 25 April 2010 08:56

DSA members are invited to visit Riverlea’s Whitland centre on Sunday 23 May for an exclusive tour of their facilities. Riverlea offer a wide range of agricultural, horticultural and construction equipment, ranging from the smallest nuts and bolts through chainsaws and strimmers to the largest tractors and uniloaders – both new and reconditioned. We’ll be seeing both what they have on offer, and their servicing and repair operations – and some of the lesser-known services they can offer, such as made-to-order welding tasks. Members will be able to buy items at a special discount.

Full details are available to members in the events section of the website and will be in the May newsletter.

Too many Geraniums? Have a Gin anf Tonic PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 16 April 2010 19:11

Flavoured spirits can be a hit and miss addition to your drinks cabinet, some so strong they can’t be mixed with anything except a couple of paracetamol and an early night, and some so bland they’re not worth the bother.

However someone has come up with the idea of using geraniums to flavour gin. one of those staples of the cottage garden. It’s certainly aromatic and makes a very pleasing G&T that does deliver a floral note on the palette without tasting like your granny’s geranium bathsalts. This would definitely work well in cocktails although the flavour needs to be enhanced with a mixer rather than overwhelmed.

But not what kind of Geranium they use in the aromatics which would be nice to know. For example do they use Geraniums, or Pelargoniums in the recipe? The geraniums we all know as pot plants in the UK, those stiff turgid plants with the most heavily scented hairy leaves that burst the air with wonderful aromas when your clothes brush against them in house lobbies in the summer, are not Geraniums, they are Pelargoniums.

Geranium is the common bushy low growing garden plant found in flower and shrub beds up and down the world. A delightful hardy border plant indeed but not so aromatic and not, I suspect, the plant used in this gin. But then 'Pelargonium Gin' just doesn't roll off the tongue does it.

One to savour rather than slurp.
