Farm Walks PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 06 September 2009 00:00

I am sure that any member who has been on one of our farm walks will agree that they are interesting events which generate friendships, inspire others and are a source of valuable information. Our next farm visit ties in with the Harvest Lunch, full details are in your latest newsletter but we are always on the look out for members who are able to host other visits.

Farm Walks are a way to share your experiences, show off your strengths and inspire others. The scope of previous walks has covered many of our members interests from alpacas to pigs and from nurture to nursery but their are a lot more possibilities out there. Perhaps your holding is commercial in which case a visit may well drum up trade or create marketing opportunities or maybe you have a picture postcard holding which most of us only dream about, whatever type of holding you have think about sharing it with other members, just for a few hours at least.

Use the contact us section of the website to email or telephone a committee member, we are waiting to take your call.

Eco-house Tours 10 – 4

Start at Danygarn, SA42 0QX 01239 821 150
Second stop Constant SA42 0QR 01239 820839 directions below
Cost £11 each, pay on the day, children free.
Bring packed lunch
There is a 3 mile walk, including fickle weather and mud. Wellies are
good to take off easily when we go indoors.

The tour is around Cilgwyn, although the first stop is the other side of Newport.
We drive from the first stop in convoy, but keep phone and directions to second stop with
you in case convoy gets split. At this stop we have coffee, there are convenient loos here
and at the third stop. From the second stop we walk so bring what you need out of the car.

The second stop is about 11.10 am and it's 'Constant', SA420QR, ph. 01239 820839.
However it is strongly recommended not to miss the first stop which is with a very
knowledgeable architect with a passive house building. Bring your questions, usually costs
a lot to get this sort of information.

Directions:
1st Stop:
Danygarn, Mountain west, Newport, Pembrokeshire SA42 0QX

To get there:
From A487 (Fishguard – Newport road)
On the outskirts of Newport from Fishguard direction, turn R into
Ffordd Bedd Morris. The road forks after a mile or so, follow the main part of road to the
left. Danygarn is the second house on left after the fork. Satnavs have led people astray.
Second stop: Constant, Cilgwyn, Newport SA42 0QR. 2 miles from Newport on A487 at
crossroads with pink shed-like building turn R towards Cilgwyn. Go over next X rds.
Constant is house on the road on L, near the sign Cilgwyn.
Tour content:

Julian Bishop architect: Passive house standard office

Constant: Ground source heat pump, under-floor heating, local species hardwood interior., solar
hot water, extended family lifestyle.

Fachongle Isaf: Wind turbine, solar pv for outdoors, reed-bed sewage treatment, electric bikes,

synchronised fashion. Communal gardens grow most of the food eaten by the community.

DSA Bowling Challenge Saturday 10 October 2009 PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 19 July 2009 16:23
It seems like only last year when we had the very first DSA Bowling Challenge, well it is here again!

The event is held near Oakwood at C2000 and is a Saturday afternoon slot for two hours.  The challenges for 2009  are for the top scoring male and top scoring female from either of the first two games played as well as the highest break, so three prizes to play for each with the added bonus of an engraved cup to supplement the honour of winning.

Entry is open to any members over 12 years old and the cost is around £7.50 per person which covers the hire of the lanes, shoes etc. We cannot be exact about the price as the it is the cost of hiring the lanes for two hours divided by the number of people taking part but £7.50 is about as good as we can guess.  Last year it was £7 but we had almost full lanes.

If you are interested please email me via the DSA website or leave a message on my answer phone 01994230832

Permaculture in Practice PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 11 July 2009 06:45
Permaculture is about creating sustainable human habitats by following nature's patterns." It uses the diversity, stability and resilience of natural ecosystems to provide a framework and guidance for people to develop their own sustainable solutions to the problems facing their world, on a local, national or global scale. It is based on the philosophy of co-operation with nature and caring for the earth and its people.

A System of design:

"Maximum contemplation; minimum action"

Permaculture is about thinking before you act.

Permaculture is not a set of rules; it is a process of design based around principles found in the natural world, of co-operation and mutually beneficial relationships, and translating these principles into actions.

This action can range from choosing what you eat, how you travel, the type of work you do, and where you live, to working with others to create a community food-growing project. It's about making decisions that relate to all your other decisions; so one area of your life is not working against another. For example, if you are planning a journey, consider other tasks that can be completed on the way to your destination (combining a trip to the leisure centre with buying food on the way home, for example).

It means thinking about your life or project as a whole system - working out the most effective way to do things that involves the least effort and the least damage to others, and looking for ways to make relationships more beneficial.

It is essential to observe your surroundings before making choices. Taking stock at the beginning of a project (whether it be building a house or planting a window box) of the available resources in terms of time, materials, skills, money, opportunities, land etc, and thinking about how these resources can relate to each other is a useful basis for designing a sustainable and effective system. To take the example of a garden - careful observation over the course of a few months can give information about the sunniest spots, the path of a neighbourhood fox, which areas are sheltered from the wind. Such information is not always immediately available, but can ultimately be very important.

A key feature of the design process in permaculture is "zoning". This is about placing things appropriately in relation to each other, and works on the principle that those things which require frequent attention are placed closest to the home. It is about using time, energy and resources wisely, which can be as simple as planting your most used herbs nearest to your kitchen, or as complex as planning a community.
