1 North Yorkshire Smallholders Society

The Society

The Society was founded in 1999 to meet the needs of smallholders throughout the northeast of England. Our membership now extends from Lincolnshire in the south to County Durham in the North.

If you keep sheep, pigs, hens or horses, grow vegetables or any other small farming activity then this could be the society for you. You don’t have to be a land owner or a business as long as you have an interest in rural activities that you are willing to share with others.

Our aims are to bring together people of similar interests, to share information and advice and to make friends.
2 Over The Gate
We think and hope that you will find us to be a genuinely friendly site catering for people from all
walks of life who share an interest in countryside matters.
3 Smallholders Online from a garden to a family farm
Our editorial stance is non-political but unashamedly "green", supportive of organic and local food production, and opposed to the centralisation and international trade of agribusiness.
4 The Goose Club
All you would need to know about geese from those who are passionate about keeping them.
5 The Shire Horse Society
The home of the Shire Horse Society on the internet. This site is constantly updated with the latest news and information about the Society's work.
6 Specialist Cheesemakers Association
The Specialist Cheesemakers Association (SCA) is an alliance of cheesemakers, retailers, wholesalers and cheese lovers that offers an opportunity to share ideas and increase sales of British cheese. With all the pitfalls, rules and regulations facing the industry today it is no longer possible to operate in isolation, and the SCA can communicate on members behalf with a strong, confident voice.

As well as providing a common voice to Government and media, our objectives are to encourage excellence in cheesemaking, raise the profile of traditional British cheeses, and to provide a forum for members to exchange ideas. The SCA provides help with any quality or hygiene problems and advice on food safety management.

The SCA publishes ‘The Specialist Cheesemakers Code of Best Practice’, which is an essential guide for specialist cheese production. The latest edition was released in 2007.

Patron of the SCA: H.R.H. The Prince of Wales
7 The Welsh Black Cattle Society
Croeso / Welcome

As Wales’ native cattle breed, the story of the Welsh Black is steeped in history – for centuries these cattle have been prized possessions which are equally at home in craggy uplands or lush lowland pastures.

But this hardy breed that provides high quality meat and milk has much to offer modern farming systems, with its ease of production and award-winning succulent meat.

For 100 years the Welsh Black Cattle Society has nurtured, promoted and improved the breed, a job it continues with zeal.
8 The Mutton Renaissance CLub
The Mutton Renaissance Club is a new group that has been formed to bring together those involved in the production, processing, retailing and serving of high quality mutton.
9 The National Hedgelaying Society
Hedgerows help to define the uniqueness of the British countryside and are an important wildlife habitat.
They require sympathetic management if we are to preserve them for future generations.
10 The Lleyn Sheep Society
Lleyn sheep originate from the Lleyn peninsula in Wales and until recently were a relatively unfamiliar breed of sheep in the UK.
Over the past 10 years the Lleyn breed has caught the eye of many farmers, and now Lleyn sheep can be found almost all over the Country.
Farmers soon find that the Lleyn ewe is an ideal sheep, quiet in nature, prolific, has great maternal instincts, milky, & will not eat you out of house and home, The Lleyn fits in to many situations and its versatility suits both lowland and upland grazing.
11 The Dry Stone Walling Society
Welcome to the Dry Stone Walling Association's website, which we hope you will find both informative and helpful.
12 Guinea Fowl Information
Guinea Fowl are a fascinating subject and the more you get to know them, the more amusing you find their quirky ways.
